About Gaffney, SC

Gaffney, SC
Gaffney, SC, near Farrell Kia in Spartanburg, SC

Farrell Kia in Spartanburg, SC, attracts customers from cities and counties throughout the Upstate, including nearby Gaffney, SC, sometimes referred to as the peach capital of South Carolina, as evidenced by the Peachoid water tower ("The Moon over Gaffney") that looms over Interstate 85 within the city.

The city takes its name from one Michael A. Gaffney, an Irish émigré who moved to the area from Charleston in 1804 after earlier migrating from New York. Mr. Gaffney set up a tavern and lodging house in a location where two major roads of the time met, one that ran from the mountains of North Carolina to Charleston, the other from Charlotte into Georgia. "Gaffney's Cross Roads," as the tavern and lodge was known grew in popularity and stature as more people came to live and work in the surrounding area.

Mr. Gaffney died in 1854, but the area came to be known as "Gaffney City" by 1872, and became the county seat of the newly-formed Cherokee County (comprised of former parts of York, Union and Spartanburg counties) in 1897. Gaffney became a major center for South Carolina's textile industry for many years, and that industry drove much of the county's economy into the 1980s.

The construction of Interstate 85 brought more industries to Gaffney in the ensuing years, with many locating along the new highway. This caused uptown Gaffney to languish for a time, but recent renovations to the downtown area has brought about a resurgence of commercial activity. Plans for the downtown area include the establishment of a 20-acre park on the grounds of a recently demolished mill, and a recently completed downtown plaza alongside City Hall features a refurbished fountain and extensive landscaping.

The pride of Gaffney, however, may be its Indians. The Gaffney High School Indians have won numerous honors in multiple sports over the years, including 16 AAAA state football championships, more than any other school in South Carolina. The school's boys basketball team became the first AAAA school in the state to win three consecutive state championships in 2005. Notable alumni include current NFL players Sidney Rice and Rocky McIntosh.
